David Bowie (2016)
I first released this cover of Blackstar after being on Sky Arts’ Visconti’s Unsigned Heroes in 2017. On this show I met and performed with Tony Visconti, as well as met Stewart Copeland and Nitin Sawhney. Doing this arrangement was a pivotal moment for me – it was the first piece I’d ever released entirely arranged, performed, and produced on my own. This stripping back of collaborators but also of instrumentation – the entire piece is performed on violin and viola combined with an Electro-Harmonix HOG pedal giving extra octaves, modulations, and harmonies – was almost the starting point for the next stage of my career, shifting more from performer to composer. So it feels apt that this was through Bowie’s music – the ultimate chameleon of rock. When I first heard Blackstar I was blown away by the whole album. With Blackstar I wanted to create something dignified and regal but at the same time otherworldly. I guess I treated it as a tribute and an offering to Bowie rather than an arrangement or cover. Exploring those intricate harmonies with layers of violin. At the end when it was finished I closed my eyes and as the last layer I improvised the violin solo that comes in about two minutes into the track.
