Roxy Music (1982)
My parents used to listen to this album a lot – it came out the year after I was born, so I’ve been listening to Avalon since my very early years. Like Bowie this is a band who fused art with music - they were curious, they experimented and did the unexpected both with their look and their sound. It was a real privilege to tour with Roxy Music playing keyboards and violins in 2010, and I’ve continued to work with Phil Manzanera (lead guitar). This piece is the thread that links my childhood through to my performing years touring as a session player in rock music to my life now as a composer, arranger, and producer. I was so nervous sending this to Phil, but it got the thumbs up – and he is now guesting on two tracks on my upcoming solo album.
